The problem is that you need to "mount" the USB disk and make sure that the permission are properly setup. I run Ubuntu's daddy, Debian, and have only internal disks, so I can't help with the specifics. But there is a way. You might want to check the Ubntu forums. There are tons of very knowledgeable and helpful folks there.
