Here is what I use, for what it's worth... I have a collection of about
20k songs and have migrated from Windows/Itunes/SBS to Ubuntu gradually
over the past 2 years.

Disk mirroring using software raid 1 disks (MDadm), plus rsync to
mirror to Windows disk

Ripping - Rubyripper for most accurate ripping & transcoding to flac &
mp3. This also does replaygain calculation.

Tagging - Musicbrainz picasa which also downloads cover art where it's
available in Musicbrainz. Otherwise I simply google for the image &
save as folder.jpg. I've decided not to embed cover art in tags.
Cover art downloader is great but not available on Linux. There is
also a cover art plugin in SBS. Occasionally use EasyTag for manual
editing of tags (also heard good reports of kid3-qt but have not tried
it)

I rate all my tracks (0-5*) using Erland Isaakson's Trackstat SBS
plugins. Consequently I have a script (python) to add new tracks to
the library and remove duplicate tracks, transferring ratings if I
replace a track with a better version.

Local music - Not used much but I mostly use Amarok for music
management as it seems to give best access for search, edit etc

I haven't found a good app which allows me to sync music and ratings to
an android phone.

Interested to hear others' thoughts...
