OK, its not as simple as I thought!

I came across this https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/pull/461/files
which obviously covers the HifiBerry modules etc.. I am guessing the
modules/drivers work with the ES9023 because the I2S format is the
same.

Can anybody confirm this? I would greatly appreciate a brief description
on how this all works. For example, would you need a separate module for
every board using a PCM5102A DAC or would a generic module per DAC (or
DAC type) be adequate?

In the meantime I will hook up the Pi/ES9023 to my main system and see
how it sounds (so far just a brief test with low level gear).
