Don't think it is resampling. Squeezelite is opening ALSA device 16 bit, therefore it must be truncating the 8 LSB's from the 96/24 before outputting to ALSA as 96/16. I'll fire you the other patches, I had for the sunxi git source, one of which is a patch so SPDIF supports 24 bit.
