I was surprised too but I set it up to dual boot into Raspbian and OpenElec. In Raspbian I get both channels, in OpenElec I get only the left channel so it is not a wiring issue. Alsamixer is not accessible in OpenElec presumably because I have read that ALSA is not included for the RPi build (Squeezelite also can't see the built-in RPi audio outputs maybe for this reason too).
