I have 2 custom Fedora images. One is F20 based, armv6 just like the
Raspbian image so it is backward compatible and will work on both old
and new hardware. I also have a F21 armv7 image. That can only be used
with the 2B.

I doubt it'll be long before there is a Raspbian image optimised for the
new hardware at the expense of backward compatibility. ;)
