If it's working why worry any further. It could have been something as simple as a dodgy Ethernet cable which you have inadvertently fixed by swapping things around. It did sound like a networking issue. The first rule of networking is "check the cables". The second rule is also "check the cables" You'd be surprised how many times a loose cable has been the cause of a problem in my experience.
