I am not sure if this helps. Is the external drive connected to a Mac? I will often download photos from my digital camera on my _Windows_ laptop and then copy the files over my internal network to the external drive hanging off of the Mac mini. When I copy files that way I have run into file permission issues when I try to access the files on the external drive attached to the Mac mini from from my _Mac_ laptop. However, if I log into the Mac Mini and pull the files over the internal network from the Windows laptop onto the external drive hanging off of the Mac mini, then those file permission issues don't occur.
