Having read through all this I really think you have a number of
problems that you haven't yet hit.

The best option that will work with the car is a portable USB drive and
mp3's but even this is limited by the flash memory in the car
infotainment system. It is unlikely to be able to properly index 170GBs
of files (even as MP3). The library size limit is determined by the
capacity of the flash memory. 

Some people have built Pi based LMS servers that reside in the car,
tweaked to provide WLAN access point and then use an old iPhone (and
iPeng) as a player / controller via bluetooth. Unfortunately this may
not be fully controllable via the car infotainment system. Try your
phone via bluetooth and see what the control is like.
