I was that guy :p I was talking "theoretically". It "should" work, and
with some trial and error you'll probably get the right settings, but
even if for some reason Pi and speakers would refuse to talk to each
other a simple "Digi" HAT for the PI with a TOSLINK output will solve
that issue and get you going up to 24/192 for a relatively small outlay
