I am sure that there is a way to get LMS working with newer perl versions; but the loss of LMS is scary to contemplate.
The tarball should indeed be working. But if in doubt, you can compile the Perl binaries from https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver-vendor/tree/public/7.9/CPAN
