aplay does not (I think) provide a way for you to change the volume when you issue the command. In theory I suppose you could issue other ALSA commands to do that ... perhaps have a differently named ALSA device with the volume set within it and then adjust that (softvol?) via UI preferences selection. I imagine that Ralphy has a better way in mind.
