You can select which version (i.e. 7.9.3, 7.9.4, 8.0.0), however, you
cannot pick which commit to use.  AFAIK, the distribution server only
keeps the latest version of the tarballs.

If you want to play with different git commits., then you will need to
install from git, and handle everything manually.
