Powersave is indeed a good solution, I use that combined with the -G
option to trigger the GPIO that turns the display on and off. 

As an alternative, if you really want to link it directly to the play
state, you could use the 'shell script provided here.'

I also use that in a player with an LED button to indicate the play
state. 

I could imagine though that if you link this directly to a relais
switching the amp the -G option is probably better, because play state
changes more often. If there's a small hickup in your internet
connection while streaming a radio, for example, it would already switch
the amp off and on again (I think many amplifiers will produce an
audible plop when switched on).
