To give you a little bit of guidance to what Jim suggested:
1) Samba, follow the picoreplayer instructions here (step #3): https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/add_usb_hdd/. Note it might not look exactly like the instructions as picoreplayer is changing faster than the documentation can keep pace. I work on a windows machine and I setup a network location to my music via samba, then just transfer the files as you would any files 2) For the auto rescan, I don't use it, but I think you might have to have the plugin enabled (unless it is enabled by default?): 36826 so if you don't see the menu Jim illustrated, that's why.
