Don't know if these tidbits will help, but here are some things I have picked up.

If you haven't already, try using either XpOStFacto or Startup Disk X to do your restart. > Do I need an internal SCSI drive for install? Can't see that you would. After all, internal IDE is standard on current Macs. It sounds to me like you've researched this pretty thoroughly, so I don't know if my newbie advice will be of any aid, but maybe something will click there.
