Try holding down the Option key right after the reboot chime from X. Works for me with Apple G3/266 processor on an XLR8 carrier card-Powermac 7500. If you have an ATI video card-try the latest postings from ATI-there are new Radeon 8500 and Combo drivers that were recently posted. GOOD LUCK
