After I installed AppleScript Update 1.8.3 (which the FF mpeg X mpg2 
encoder needs), the CDRW is now recognized even via non-verbose boot.

I think the AppleScript Update makes the 8600 boot slightly slower 
and maybe there is now more time for the CDRW the be recognized even 
in non-verbose boot mode?
