>BUT keeping the VM files in a separate partition WILL: >- reduce fragmentation of the primary partition >- save space if you're stuck with an 8GB boot partition >- save the OS from searching the filesystem for the VM files
This last one is incorrect. OS X has to search thru a filesytem for the swapfile no matter what disk or partition it is on. Until Apple supports swapping on raw partitions (no filesystem), the swapfile will be accessed thru the filesystem. One could argue that a dedicated partition/disk has fewer files and less "searching", but I don't think there is a measurable difference between finding a file on a empty filesystem vs. a full filesystem. One other possible benefit of a separate swap partition on the same disk would be if the swap volume does not have journalling turned on, but the boot volume does. No sense taking the performance hit of jounalling in the swap process. -- Charles Dostale [EMAIL PROTECTED] System Administrator, Silver Oaks Communications http://www.silveroaks.com 824 17th Street, Moline IL USA 61265 309-797-9898 -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
