As people have mentioned, the first incarnation of Mail was pretty lacking,... when I first got a G4 at work running 10.1 I used Mail for about 2 days then went back to Entourage in Classic mode.
Mail v2 is much better, the spam filter works really well, but most of its value comes through the tight integration with Address Book, iCal, and iSync/nSync. The only thing missing is a newsreader.
