Which is why I'd like to run it...so as to have a compatible
environment, and a MS-free system. The only MS software I have is the
MS UAM for our Win2K servers, and Internet Explorer for those times I
have to hit sites that don't work with anything else.

Now I did, finally get it running today, after looking at some of the
postings on the various message boards.

I started X11 and in the xterm box, typed (at the command prompt):

'/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.1/program/smaster &'

The first time (after a rather long delay), the splash box came up
(smack-dab in the middle of my available screen area, which, since
I've got two monitors, looked really odd) a bunch of windows popped on
the screen momentarily then it all went away. This could have been
because I tried it again during the long delay :-/

Second time it fired up. Seems to work, though it's slow. (that said,
it's not a speed demon on my system at work, either a PII450...yeah,
we're like the cobbler's children all the faculty and their labs have
newer PC's 800 MHz, 1200 Mhz, 2000Mhz P4's and we in the IT department
have old, beat up PII's ...though they've promised me that when I need
a new computer...(mine is out of warrantee, and will be replaced when
it dies) I can finally get a Mac! WooHoo! Now, which would be subtler,
some iron filings in the power supply, or a nail driven through the
motherboard? :-)

Now I did have the old XDarwin environent installed, and some folks
have mentioned that Open Office works with Apples X11 stuff then, so
that may be it.

I *really* wish Apple would take this code and make it native. (I'm
really hoping that Safari is a 'proof of concept' for this effort!)
They would have a *killer* Office Killer.

There was a brief rumor a while back to this effect, that Apple had
sent some programmers over to Sun to work on a native port, but those
were quickly denied by all involved.
