This is not true AFAIK, my Mac (OS X 10.2.3) connects to my Windows XP machine via SMB, and every time it creates or opens or copies or does ANYTHING to a file on my Windows machine, it creates a .DS_Store file (hidden) in the directory the file was in (to store folder information like background, sort order, etc.), and a file with the name ".filename",where filename is the name of the file accessed. This file contains "resource" information, including filetype. It is also hidden. As long as you don't remove this file, the Mac will be able to remember the file types. Also, with the advent of OS X, file extensions are back in (yipee!), and OS X will recognize many file types (such as dmg, img, sit, jpg, etc.) even if they have lost their resource forks, because it uses the extensions to determine file types. BTW, are you using Office.X with OS X, or another version of Office in classic mode? Hope this helps, Shawn Mulligan _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE*. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
