Can anyone explain why my G4/450 DP, 10.2.4, can't/won't access the 9.2.2 drive on my 7300/180 G4/350 running 10.2.3? I have set up a user with access to the 7300 and can link to it and access files on the 10.2.3 drive by placing an alias of that drive in the user's folder. But when i try to access the 9.2.2 drive using the same technique, I get a message telling me to "insert the drive, wait for it to come up on the desktop, and try again". The only difference I can see, apart from the obvious OS difference, is that the 9.2.2 drive was formatted in HFS, while the 10.2.3 drive is HFS+. Also, the 7300 won't let me change the ownership of it's 9.2.2 drive and shows it as "unknown". ?????????????????????? ------------------------------ Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 10:54:20 -0700 From: Bruce Johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Ethernet Networking w/OS 10.2.3 In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Murali wrote: > The only difference I can see, apart from the obvious OS difference, is > that the 9.2.2 drive was formatted in HFS, while the 10.2.3 drive is > HFS+. That's likely the culprit...why on earth do you have the drive formatted in HFS? Try selecting the checkbox 'Ignore permissions on this drive' -- Bruce Thanks to those who offered suggestions. It seems OS X is a much more complex and precise networking software than previous OS's! Sheesh.......... A reformat from HFS to HFS+ did not solve the problem. But reconfiguring the User Accounts did, as well as logging into with the correct User, which in my case was the User with Administrative access. This enabled me to access all drives and all files and programs. I'm still working on understand how to set up a User without Administrative access who can access all the drives, but haven't been able to do so yet. The "Ignore Permissions" dialog did work and I have been able to change the drive ownership. FWIW, Retrospect recognizes there is no catalog on the newly formatted drive and builds one from the back disk set. Now both machines are very stable: the 7300/180 w/NewerTech G4/350 card is running 9.1 and 10.2.4 and the Gigabit G4/450 DP runs under 9.2.2 and 10.2.4. Regards, m.
