Well Josh, I hate to tell you this but you were lucky enough to find a
shop that ripped you off IMHO. ( This is also my way of telling you
this is bogus info and not helpful at all ;-) While motherboards can
and do go bad I'd guess a lot get replaced that are fine ( or at least
people are charged for new boards ;-) .

I also had this problem on my S900/J700 UMAX clone machine after
installing 10.2.5 using software update. This was after having no
problems with any of the other updates. My usual way of getting back to
OS 9.x after running in OSX is to restart or force restart and hold
down the option key and it will normally restart in OS 9.x After this
10.2.5 issue it was more stubborn then usual kept trying for OSX and
would then go black. (This is called by me and others "The Black Screen
of Death"It was a real bummer tell the fix was found and has lead to a
lot of people giving up on their machines)I zapped the pram (and to do
a complete zap turned the machine off by unplugging it)
So powered up and held down the option+ apple+p+r keys and held for
three separate chimes. I had to do this about 2 times and it finally
booted into OS 9.22. Had this not worked the other fix is to remove the
battery and unplug the machine for apox 15 min or so. Find and push the
cuda switch, re-plug put the battery back in and away you go. This
resets the open firmware to factory default. I then ran Disk Warrior
which took a long time but still wouldn't boot. I had to do a
re-install of OSX from the 10.2 Cd. It wasn't as bad as I expected.
Someone recommended I use the archive and keep network settings
features when reinstalling. It was amazing kept all my old files and
even my internet settings! I then downloaded the 10.2.5 combo update
(which covers 10.2.1-10.2.5) installed and all is well. Took most of
one evening but could have been worse! Will S
