I have had the problem of loss of sound in 10.2.6 on my 9500. This is the only os x version I have used. I am using external speakers. The internal has been removed. The sound comes and goes with no apparent cause.
When my sound is out, iTunes will not run any mp3s but remain on 0 seconds. Quicktime, during these times of outage, will play an entire streaming movie without sound, but when I play an mpeg movie, it plays only for the first few seconds of the movie, then will remain stopped on a frame while the slider continues to move.
