Three rants about capitalization:
1. Memory is RAM, for Random Access Memory. It's not Ram or ram.
2. Cycles are abbreviated Hz in honor of Mr. Hertz. KHz, MHz, and GHz are
the correct abbreviations for kilohertz, megahertz, and gigahertz.
3. The computer is a Mac, short for Macintosh. MAC stands for the Machine
Address built into ethernet support circuitry.
As an editor, it drives me nuts to see these used incorrectly. (I guess you have to be a bit anal to be an editor....)
On the subject of nomenclature:
bit and byte are "b" & "B" respectively, so that Gb is gigabit and GB is gigabyte.
The prefix letters "k" and "K" have different meanings, with "k" being reserved in the SI system for 10^3 or 1,000;
while "K" is 2^10 or 1,024. This is often used incorrectly, for example a modem's speed is actually kbps (1,000 bits per second); yet it's commonly seen as the incorrect Kbps. Similarly, a floppy that is 1,440 KB is not 1.44 MB because that's mixing "k" together with "K" to arrive at an incorrect chimera term. (1.4 MB would be a correct approximation since 1,440 / 1,024 = 1.40625)
It's correct to call portable storage by the term disc with a "c". Example: Compact Disc, floppy disc, USB disc. Storage that's hardwired goes by the term disk with a "k". Example: Hard Disk, RAM Disk.
