I tried the Swim3 0.96j floppy driver on my 7500 G4/400 10.2.6 and it
was a disaster. I was unable to reboot after the initial installation.
Searching the web for information was futile. Mostly others looking for
uninstall instructions. The e-mail links of everyone were dated and
bounced. I tried the OSXPM to uninstall the package, but it's receipt
didn't have a contents list. I eventually deleted the swim3.kext which
was the only file I could find. Still no boot. It froze solid on the
gray screen very early, before any verbose dialog. I ran Disk Doctor,
Techtool & Repair Permissions. It wouldn't safe boot, and single user
dialog showed a big long list of kext files and then it stopped solid.
I tried moving a few .kext's near the freeze point out of the
System>Library but that didn't help. I deleted the Extensions.mkext &
Extension.kextcache files and still nothing. I zapped the PRAM and the
NVRAM, and yanked the battery & reset and still no boot. I was panicky
myself by now. It turns out the solution was fairly simple and straight
forward. I had another drive with OS X, and I used it to boot, and then
reinstalled the Combo Update on the frozen system. Lesson I learned,
try reinstalling the Combo Update FIRST. I have no idea how I'd have
done this if I didn't have OS X on two drives so that I could run the
installer to target the bad System? If anyone has any further insights,
such as an easier way to resurrect a dead System, I'm all ears. I'm
mainly hoping this might archive so that others might find it. I'd
avoid that floppy driver, it killed my System for a while. Kris Tilford
