I've got quite a few Mac's, both supported and unsupported. I've used
the "option" boot on the supported Mac's to boot from Firewire drives,
and on the unsupported Mac's to boot from OS 9 drives from OS X. I've
read that the unsupported Mac's don't support Firewire boot because of
some firmware problem. I realize that I'm only using OS X because of
someone's patches that add the OS X support. In my three 7500's, there
is an empty ROM SIMM slot. The Apple Service Manual for the 7500 says
that the slot is for a ROM SIMM, but would normally be empty on
versions where the 4 MB ROM is soldered to the motherboard. Evidently
all three of mine are soldered. Is it possible that some type of flash
SIMM could be placed into this empty ROM slot and flashed with some
firmware support patch that would enable Firewire boot and some other
options not available on unsupported machines because of non-flash
firmware? I realize this is probably too technical for a little user's
group, but who knows what genius might say - yeah, that's possible, and
I know just how to do it. I'd love to have Firewire boot on my 7500's.
