Hi listers,

I decided to take the plunge and attempt an install upgrade to Panther from 10.2.8.

I DLed XPF 3.0a9, popped in the installer disc, disabled the L2 cache on the card and allowed it to copy the files and restart.

Equipement:
7600 with 350 megs of RAM
MaxPowr G3 400 / 1MB
ATA66 Promise (Ultratek? I forget what the ROM says) PCI card connected to...
A 40 gig WD hd
A Rage128 PCI video card with 16 megs of RAM
A USB card

Upon reboot it seemed to boot from the CD, eventually broke from the white apple screen to a console listing. This also happened when I installed Jag a few months ago. Eventually it gets to two intriguing (and troubling) lines. One says that the firmware on the ATA card is at 1.1.1 and seems to be substituting 1.1.4(?) The other one is Waiting for root device. This repeats over and over with about a 30 sec pause between messages.

I removed my USB card and tried again. Same messages. I reset the Mac with Cntl Apple Power and got a chime and a black screen. opt apple PR does not work. I pulled the PRAM battery and the AC plug for about a half hour. Held the CUDA switch for 10 secs. Same black screen upon powerup.

In order to get Jag installed I did updated the Promise card's firmware from their website as documented on XLR8yourmac.com and the Jag install worked NP. I have been using this Mac for months. Now I have a black screen and I do not know how to get my Mac back to OS9 to try and diagnose this.

I know that Panther is supposed to work but I am really stuck with a dead desktop and need to get her up and alive soon.

Thanks,
Scott Strungis
