Bus pinching duly noted.

In principle, this should matter less on the 9500/9600 tsunami mobo. Although not strictly two independent buses, the top three and bottom three PCI slots are independently controlled. So I would hope that running a Radeon 7000 in one PCI bank, while leaving the other bank for everything else, would work okay.

Can't say till I try this, though.

My concern about the QE reqs is to make sure I understand them fully for the other systems I'm experimenting with.

It's clear from many reports that the ATI 7000 PCI is the best bet for most unsupported OS X work, particularly if bought cheap as a PC card and then flashed to Mac. It's also clear from Apple's claims for Panther, and the observations of others, that Panther with QE should give around three times the Aqua 2D performance of Jag without QE. While I haven't myself yet tried QE over PCI, we clearly have a communal interest in getting unsupported QE on Panther running without glitch, given the benefit this should bring.

The 3x claim seems about right but people report mixed speed improvements with QE over PCI. Some things are faster, some slower. If you have a B&W G3 with it's PCI/66 slot and aren't using the other PCI slots for anything, it seems to be a good feature to turn on.

But with the slower PCI/33 slots in older Macs, it brings PCI throughput to a crawl. I have my PCI slots full and transfer lots of data via PCI IDE card and occasionally PCI Firewire and 100bT and am happy to take advantage of Panther's regular video speedup without having any negative effects on my HD/Enet/FW throughout.
