I'd say that was your problem. The fact that you can SMB to other machines means that your basic networking is working.

OS X's firewall is pretty brain-dead, in that it's default setting is to exclude *everything* on your local net from going out, as well as excluding outside stuff from coming in.

It's just the way 'ipfw' (the unix firewall) works. You have to feed it 'rules' to pass traffic. It's not so hard once you get used to it.

The latter is what you want, the former I can not envision a scenario where I would want that.

I've tried a couple of times to use OS X's firewall, but I always get frustrated and give up.

Grab a copy of an App called 'Brickhouse'. It's easier to use and ultimately totally flexible. It also has built-in IP sharing. If you need any help with it give me mail.

XP's is much easier to setup and use, and it's default setting is actually what you want.

I wouldn't trust XP any further than I could throw the Microsoft HQ building. One of the reasons I'm behind a tough firewall is to stop little urks getting to my XP box.

I'd say you have excluded the G3's IP address somehow/somewhere. If OS X's firewall setup wasn't so primitive, things like this wouldn't be an issue.

I fixed it in the end. I had originally used the G3 to do what the 9600 is doing now, so it was still trying to IP share and the two were conflicting. Simply turned of the IP hsarting in BrickHouse and removed the Startup Item. Job sorted - G3 back on the 'net.
