The actual limit isn't in the IDE controller, it's in the ROM's IDE
drivers... they can't address larger IDE disks than that, so you can't
boot from larger partitions.

I generally peel off a chunk for a boot partition anyway, so that if
everything goes pear-shaped and I need to rebuild the system partition
I don't have to back up and restore the whole disk.
