hi folks,

here's the way I got the Panther on the Umax S900 (9500 clone). Jaguar was no Problem before.

config:
2GIG IBM Drive ID0 holds 9.1 and Helper (more info to follow)
4GIG IBM Drive ID2 spare, maybe I put a Jaguar on it
9GIG IBM Drive ID6 holds Panther
24x Apple CD ID3
2x Philips Burner ID4
on fast onboard bus

368 MB Ram (some interleaved, some not)
400 Mhz/1MB Cache G3 Upgrade
onboard cache switched off by soldering a jumper socket and placed one on it o/c (dont remember yet the number but it's between Rams and Processor slot

Radeon 7000 in upper slot
PC Firewire Card
USB Card with Opti chip
from up to down

a Firewire Drive with 6 Gigs

xpf 3.0a11

I tried to instal Panther on the 4GIG Drive, but got a no bootable HFS Partition Error and Cannot boot into CD Error
Reformating the drive won't worked, not with 9.1 and even not in 10.2 or from the 10.3 Boot CD (what I tried later)

As I have all my Data on a 2,5" portable firewire drive and I got sick about it I deleted my 9GIG Drive where the Jaguar was onto. Now it booted (why the hell, same driver, same bus, almost same drive...) into the Panther Installer Disk.

After Installing the beast spit out that it won't installed successfully. Checking the log it can't read something on the CDs. Those worked fine on my blue n white. (2Z693-4530 by get info about cd1). Booting the false installation dont worked as expected. Stripping down by custom installation gave same errors. The installation process took several hours btw.

On my Blue n White I have the old 6 gig drive for a System Backup of Panther (made with root privs with disk utility restore thing) so I made another copy of this on the Blue n White to the Firewire Drive.

I booted the Umax again into the Panther Installer Disk, started Disk Utilty, repaired Disk Permissions on the Firewire Drive (there were a whole bunch of errors) and restored this blue n white Panther installation (10.3.2) backup to the 9GIGster.

It won't booted, I tried a few times remembering the SCSI drive-not-shown-up issue and it booted once and I was very lucky I got into the login window with all my users I have on the blue n white

I tried to boot the FW Drive in xpf but I got repeating messages that something was not able to write on the FW drive (about 32 times until I stopped it)

So I tried to boot the 9GIG Drive with Helper Disk 2GIG (SCSI ID0, holds OS9 Installation as well) and now it boots _every_ time.

Installing XLR8 Cache Control 3.0 gave a Kernel Panic on next startup so I removed it.
Ryan's L2CacheConfig worked much better.

some xbench scores:

a) Umax Pulsar G3/400 1MB Cache, SCSI drives onboard, Radeon 7000, 368 MB Ram
b) Apple Blue n White g3/350 1MB Cache, 7200rpm 8MB Cache 120Gigster onboard, Radeon 7000, 896 MB Ram

Both Machines run _exactly_ the same Panther installation as the backup is now on the Umax

CPU a) 23.03 b) 18.04 Thread a) 35.31 b) 29.39 Memory a) 9.29 b) 26.63 Quartz a) 36.18 b) 46.67 OpenGL a) 36.73 b) 40.90 UI a) 49.61 b) 65.95 Disk a) 24.53 b) 70.93

I got the flue so I had plenty of time the last 2 days ;-))

typing this with 10.3.2 on the Umax S900,
hth,
cheers,
Sven

btw
Thanx Ryan !
