I just upgraded my G4 dual 450 with the Powerlogix dual 1.25mhz card -- definitely a lot snappier for all the graphics work I do.
And so far no trouble running Panther. <knocking on a big chunk o' wood>
Similarly, I've just hurled a Sonnet G4/500 ZIF in my B&W G3 and it runs like a dream in Panther <also touches large piece of wood>. Apple only refuses to support CPU upgrades because they a) don't like the idea you aren't buying a new Mac and b) they later the original configuration of the computer. Sonnet aren't renowned for world beating tech support but generally their upgrades work OK. I'd go with PowerLogix if it were me buying a new upgrade (I only got a Sonnet because a guy offered it to me used at a very good price) and pay that little bit extra for the superior technical assistance.
