Hi List-

I sent this email to the SuperMac list a few days ago and got one reply which covered the things that I had tried. I hope someone here can give me some info.

Yesterday I installed Panther (upgraded from 10.2.8) on my S900 with a G4 450MHz and 1 GB RAM. I was successful with the first disc- I used XpostFacto 3.0a.14 (and then downloaded 3.0a.15), which is really cleverly improved, and two things happened. On the restart, at the conclusion of the 1st install disc, I got hung up with the gray screen w/gray apple. I tried to restart a couple of times and then figured the start up might just want a lot of time...I left it for a couple of hours. When I came back it was still hung.
Whatever did this also gave me a very hard time, doing the same thing for a while when I attempted to restart from 9.2.2 onto an external drive containing 10.2.6, which I had used successfully for a lot of months. The internal ATA drive that I installed Panther on had been my main drive using 10.2.8 for quite a while. Somehow I overcame the problem with Jaguar on the external and I'm running from there. I tried to install the 2nd Panther install disc but all the Applications that I had in the folder were newer than what was on the disc and it wouldn't install. In this state, it doesn't matter anyway.

I tried to restart different ways-with and without the L-cache on in XpostFacto, also changing the throttle. But I'm not getting anywhere. Evidently, XpostFacto sees Panther on the ATA as a valid startup disc and I do get to the grey splash screen. During one of my tries I did get an error message-I think about an error in making a connection, but stupidly didn't write it down. I can't duplicate that and I don't know enough about this kind of info to act on it. Any solutions/procedures out there? I hope so because I'm running low on space in the current 4GB startup drive. Thanks in advance.
