David:
For what its worth, I am using the external AAUI port with a Farallon Etherwave (daisy-chained to a G4 iBook, G4 eMac and LaserWriter 630 Pro) but had the same symptoms when I used the RJ45 ethernet port directly into an Asante router.

This constitutes my little node. The rest of the network is G3's.

For PCI cards I also have the Sonnet ATA 66 and an ATI Radeon Mac Edition 7000 with only one 21" monitor connected and an Orange Micro FireWire / USB card.

Thats it, just the three PCI cards. None of them have been installed recently.

I have a LaCie USB external DV-RW and an external SCSI as well as a couple of internal SCSI drives, optical and storage.

As I said, this system has been rock-solid for many months...not even a burp or a sneeze, so I don't think that there is a sudden PCI conflict.

Curiouser and curiouser....

When I had these problems on my 9600 w/ Sonnet G4/800 I eventually traced it to a PCI card conflict. I was also having problems caused by using my paper shredder while the Mac was up and running. By pulling my 10/100 Ethernet card and going back to built-in, I was able to eliminate this problem. My system:

PM 9600 w/ Sonnet G4/800
768 MB RAM
PCI Cards:
A1: Sonnet ATA-66
B1: SIIG 2 port USB
C1: Firewire 3 port crd
D2: Empty
E2: Empty
F2: ATI Radeon Mac Edition
