first, get the manual for the drive (on the manufacturers site) and check all the jumpers. chances are it's set to not spin up until told to do so, you want it to spin up on boot. there could be other drive jumper problems as well. also, make sure it's terminated (all lines, not just the 50 if you're using a converter). a model number for the drive would be helpful.
