Semi-humble apologies to Apple, it was a driver issue - the .kext I was using for OS X was out of date. ACARD are offering version 1.5.2 drivers and the OS X 10.3 distribution is only 1.4.2 and thus essentially out of date. I think it actually predates OS X 10.2 which is a bit poor. ACARD and Apple really ought to take steps to keep that module up to date to avoid the situation in the first place.
Well that didn't actually do anything and now it won't boot again. This is really annoying me - I've asked ACARD if they have a solution.
