I am, albeit for absolutely no practical gain, trying to install OS X 10.1.3 on my 3400c Powerbook using XPostFacto 3.0b8 and my 10.1.3 install CD. Any ideas where it's going wrong?

I suspect that your 3400c is sulking. This can happen. This is possibly not the first time that you have "put upon" your 3400c to do something it was not designed to do and it is getting sullen and resentful.
I suggest that you desist from trying to run OSX on the 3400c and completely delete the OSX install and the XPostFacto hack before your PowerBook gets distemper.
I had a 3400c /240 for a while and found it moody at times and very prone to fits of pique.
