No difference just that my understanding is you cannot boot an unsupported mac from OSX CD can only be achieved using Xpostfacto and Internal and more recently external firewire drives.
Therefore my statement is create a carbon copy of your working OSX (in this case 10.2.x) to another HD, boot from that, run your Disk Utilities to repair permissions etc, install upgrade to non active boot drive then, reboot and run DIsk Util process again.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused, that's perhaps cause I'm down under!!!
