I have a Firewire/USB2 Combo card that's "generic" Taiwanese (i.e. cheap). It has dual VIA chipsets, VT6307 & VT6212.
The Firewire worked perfectly on a 7500 in both 9.2.2 & 10.3.5, but the USB was not functioning at all.
On a BeigeG3 the Firewire was functioning, but with some "issues" such as not being "bootable" in XPF, it would always stall at the helper drive "hand off" with "still waiting for root device . . .", and the USB was not working at all.
I was able to get this card fully functional on the 7500 by replacing the Panther IOUSBFamily.kext v.2.1.1 with the Tiger IOUSBFamily.kext v.2.2.0. The Panther kext has no UHCI support, and as far as I could tell, the newer Tiger version has no new external dependencies and just has added resources such as EHCI & UHCI support. I imagine this could enable many brands of EHCI & UHCI USB 2.0 cards in Panther. There is a an AppleVIA.kext also, so other brands would probably need to have specific support also. I believe this card will function as USB 2.0 although I don't have a 2.0 high speed device to test on it. Both the EHCI & UHCI kexts are loaded when a USB 1.1 HD is mounted, so this seems to imply full USB 2.0 function I believe.
If you need a copy of the IOUSBFamily.kext v.2.2.0 to try enabling your card, just e-mail me at ktilford(at)aol(dot)com.
I don't believe this card works properly in the BeigeG3, I believe it may have to do with different PCI bus or firmware, but works perfectly in the 7500. Now if anyone has a driver to get any function at all in 9.2.2? I've tried most of the USB extensions in various combinations, including the versions 1.3.8; 1.4.1; 1.5.6 sets. It recognizes the card as "USB card", but there hasn't been any function at all.
