Paul, Am I right in thinking that this printer has both parallel and USB connections? Either way I imagine you'd have to have an aftermarket USB card in your 9600 or 8500.
It looks like HP's site has native OS 9 drivers. As for OS X, if you are running 10.3 Gimp-Print should already be installed and may have a profile for a the 870. Or, you could download the latest version of Gimp-Print from Sourceforge (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3).
