System: 8500 with 450MHz/G4 upgrade, OS 10.2.8, 2 SCSI HDs, ATI Radeon 7000, XPostFacto, printing via GimpPrint

About a week ago, I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy my OS to my second HD (a Seagate Baracuda 17 GB). I copied everything from my home directory to it, except for music and photo directories. I corrected permissions on it and had it operational under OS 10.2.8 before trying to install Panther over it from a set of CDs made by a friend (via XPostFacto). After repeated attempts, I concluded that surface crud on the first disk was the cause and I gave up on the endeavor. [ OS 10.2.8 on that drive did freeze at least once while I was checking the "Screen Effects" Systems preferences panel.]
For the past week or so (while booted from the OS on my primary HD), my system has been having the following problems:

1. When idle for an hour or more, I usually return to find the system frozen (usually with the stock screen saver showing). I am forced to reboot. I have set Energy Saver System Preferences to "never sleep", but this does not seem to make a difference. Under OS 9.1 I ran TechToolPro and corrected some problems it found. Then I ran DiskWarrior, and fixed a couple more minor problems. The problems persisted. Thinking I had a corrupted preference file, I ran the utility, "Preferential Treatment", which found no problems.

2. Safari often aborts when trying to reply to certain (but not all) messages.

3. When viewing certain web sites with Safari, I receive messages like, "JAVA is unavailable. The page " ..." attempted to load Java content, but Java is unavailable or not installed. I know that JAVA is installed, and works for some other processes. I took a look in the console.log file and found a number of errors listed, including:

under the title: JavaNativeCrash_pid438.log

"An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
Unexpected Signal/: Bus Error occurred at PC=0x7ECAB5E8 " etc

and

 "DMProxy: theErr=-4229 [line 364, file DMProxy.c]
  DMProxy: theErr=-4229 [line 286, file DMProxy.c]"

and
"CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed: the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
loginwindow.000502e8183b.plist -- /Volumes/Data/doug85/Library/Preferences/ByHost/"

and several copies of the following error:
"CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): plist parse failed: the data is not proper UTF-8. The file name for this data could be:
<plist resource in resource fork> of bundle: /Applications/Utilities/ATI Utilities/ATI Monitor"

Except for these types of problems, the system generally works well. I am new to using the console.log and have not tried anything like deleting plist files yet. What would you recommend?
