There are several options for using unsupported DVD players with iDVD. Patchburn will enable Disk Utility and iTunes: http://www.patchburn.de/
For iDVD you visit this page: http://www.macetvideo.com/idvdssgraveur/idvdssgraveur.html which is french, so if you need a bad english translation try: http://tinyurl.com/dph72 Here's a link to the iDVD patch download: http://www.macetvideo.com/dl_center/dl_center.html It's called "iDVD sans graveur 1.0.0".
For Apple DVD Player you need a different patch. Here is a link: http://xvi.rpc1.org/playerpatch.html
These work with my cheapie MicroAdvantage DVD burner.
