I have 10.2.8 on a 9600 (originally 233 so not a mach 5 version) now with sonnet G3 300/1mB, ATA100 via sonnet tempo, ATA CWRW, Firewire/ USB combo, 10/100 NIc and SCSI card, 448 MB RAM. Prior to upgrading to G5 it also used to have wacom tablet, Epson USB scanner also plugged into it and everything works fine albeit a little slow. Video currently provided by Rage 128 pulled from Dads B&W G3 which has the Mac Radeon 7000 card that I used to have.

When Apple screwed the firmware update for the Rev A single 1.8 this machine got me out of the poo and enabled me to retrieve all the updates, new firmware patch etc from the web using safari and email via mail.

Only issues are occasionally needing to boot back to OS9 and then rebooting to OSX via xpostfacto. I also had some heat issues with CPU card - perhaps as a result of OSX pushing card hard - this was fixed cheaply by buying a small CPU fan from electronics store and mounting to heatsink of Sonnet CPU card - power for fan pulled from two tabs that supply power to side cover fan in 9600 (and 8600).

I love this machine so much I cannot part with it - we went though alot to get it to run happily together ( and it's worth nothing second hand anyway) all it does for me now is allow me to use external SCSI zip drive when I need it.

Hope theres some useful info here for you.

One day when I've got a few hours to waste on a rainy Sunday afternoon I'll have a crack at putting Panther on it.

Cheers

Simon

I'm running 10.1 on a stock 8600/300 (604ev CPU). I understand that 10.2 is now supported by XPostFacto on the 604 chip, so I intend to try that. Beyond
10.2, you'll need a G3 or G4 processor card in your 8600.

Dear Unsupported:

I am wondering if anyone has had any success installing and running OS 10.3
on a Power Mac 8600/250?

Please excuse the text snag, Roland (but you said what I was thinking)
