Except that the precursors to OS X had already been run on legacy Macs.

of a PCI Mac ( what OS?) sounds like an interesting proposition .
That's what "emulating OS X on an Xbox" means. It means emulating a Mac
that can boot OS X and booting OS X on it.
OS 9 at a portion of the XBox cPU speed of 700 MHZ sounds faster than
the 300 MHz G3 hybrid I'm using.
The emulation ran at about the speed of a 50 MHz G3. Emulation overhead is
typically about 10:1. The only reason things like the 68000 emulation on
PPC Macs or the x86 Rosetta emulation are usable is because they're not
emulating the whole OS and graphic environment, they're dropping out of the
emulator to native code when they can.
Thanks for clarifying this, it's what I mentioned before but not
explicitly enough.
PCI Macs run OS X *natively*. There is no emulation- their hardware
is directly accessed by OS X with no inefficient emulated code, it is
just older and slower than newer designs. Adding faster CPUs, disks,
and video cards improves this to the point that OS X runs well on
these systems.
The Xbox and the 360 is not hardware supported at all. Therefore all
the hardware must be emulated in software (*very slowly* as software
emulation usually goes) to match the alien hardware, as Peter said.
Let's say it's 10 times as fast as the Xbox. That's about right:
emulations typically hit you with a 10:1 ratio and Microsoft says
the 360 MAY be able to emulate the Xbox at full speed. So it's
capable of emulating a 500 MHz G3.
You can get a faster used Mac then that, for less than an Xbox.
Nah, it's not interesting unless it can boot native.
I agree.
