Luckily I can do vi - enough at least to spot what's wrong with a file peppered with Control-Ms when it seems to be upsetting my BIND. Also vim, of course, which can do a nice job of colouring syntax errors. I'm just perplexed that TextEdit can't do this simple editing job, and is so inadequate for the mixed UNIX/Mac environment which OS X sustains. Barmy.

That's why TextWrangler is a "pry it from my cold, dead hands" thing with me. I like it enough that I was one of the blithering idiots who *bought* it when it was a commercial product instead of freeware.

Wot's TextEdit for in the OS X world?

Not a whole lot. It's adequate for a quick formatted word processor- type note, it's not designed to be a programmers editor, but a end- user's editor.
