This is very requested option. And as Gary Fowler mentions it was 
supported and exists somewhere in old repository versions. It does slow 
down things a bit versus compiled in db settings. (Note that both the 
local.h and the external configuration methods have security 
implications, though different.) I will address this as soon as possible.

Thanks to all for your interest in this project. For 2010 we plan to 
introduce new javascript interfaces, dhcp, dnssec and more IP address 
space management features to make unxsBind the FOSS alternative to the 
  proprietary Infoblox products and appliances.
