What options exist for file-based sessions within a high traffic, load balanced environment?

you can use samba or nfs for the file storage. there are also other network filesystems that you can use and slap security over them. There are load balancers that use proxy information too handle the session information. there are products out there that can do this all for you. Oracle has it built into their application suite and so does ibm. In my opinion ibm has the best system out their for this type of solution. the price is high but the quality is far superior than anything i have used.

You could probably have a simple solution with apache...however, if your site is getting pounded then you might have some huge network issues. Here are some load balancers that i have looked into too...cisco, barracuda, and zues. Also when you start looking at this a home grown solution is probably not the best solution.
