(?<!www)(\.|^)([a-z0-9]+?\.(com|net|org|ws)) Mind you, this is just pure regex, This was just written off-hand and I haven't tested it in Apache but I'm pretty sure it should work similarly if you're running Apache 2.2. It should match domain.com, sub.domain.com, etc. but *not* www.domain.com.
